“Soft Kitty” hat

Winter is coming, and what better than a cuddly kitty hat to keep the cold at bay? This hat works up very quickly and can be made in all sizes and with all kinds of yarn for the border, and any faux fur for the body of the hat.

You can buy an inexpensive PDF with a photo tutorial on my Etsy shop, and support me at the same time. If you do that, picture me doing a little happy dance and saying thank you!

Happy stitching!

Materials needed for the Soft Kitty hat, with a completed border.

You will need:

  • 1 ball faux fur yarn
  • a small quantity of suitable yarn for the border. I used merino wool in a similar shade to the faux fur
  • Hooks: 4.00mm , 6.5 mm and 9.00 mm hooks but please use the appropriate hooks for your yarns. I suggest using the smaller one to join the fur to the border then switch to the medium and then to the larger one (see detailed instructions).
  • Scissors and needle

Stitches used (US terms):

  • slip stitch (slst)
  • chain (ch)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • single crochet in back loop only (BLO)
  • double crochet (dc)

To make the border: Faux fur yarn covers the border a little, and I wanted my border to show. Anyway, you have the utmost freedom to decide how wide you wish it to be! In this case I chained 12+1.

Round 1: chain 12+1

Round 2: sc in the second stitch from the hook and in all stitches to the end of the chain. Turn.

Round 3 onwards: ch1, sc BLO in every stitch. Turn, ch1 and repeat until you reach the desired length for the border.

Round 4: turn your work and slst in all the 12 stitches to close the border (pay attention not to turn it)

To make the hat:

Round 1: join the fur by making a series of sc around, in every other stitch of the border. Use a medium-sized hook for this passage: it will be easier to get into the stitches in the border and work the fur at the same time. (example: I used a 4mm for the border, a 6.5 to join the fur to the border, and a 9mm to work the fur from Round 2 of the hat onwards).

Round 2: change to larger hook. Ch2 (ch counts as a stitch in this pattern), dc in every sc around. Slst to close.

Round 3-7 Repeat Round 2 for 5 more rounds or more if you need a bigger hat.

Slip stitch or sew the gap close to make your hat. Turn inside out if necessary (for most faux fur hats it will not make much difference, if at all! I do prefer slip stitching on the right side, though, as it makes the “ears” sharper.)

Enjoy! And if you make a Soft Kitty I’ll be happy to see it – remember to tag me using #supernova_crochet and I’ll give you a shoutout on my social media <3
